Man charged in machete attack in Hacks Cross area makes first court appearance

Tevin D. Garrett was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and vandalism.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A man who Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputies said was armed with a knife and a machete when arrested Monday outside a McDonald's on Hacks Cross Road made his first court appearance Wednesday.

30-year-old Tevin D. Garrett was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and vandalism. He requested a public defender and is due back in court on Sept. 28, 2022.

According to the police affidavit, deputies were called to respond to an assault at the McDonald's in the 3800 block of Hacks Cross just after 6 p.m. Monday. They said they saw Garrett armed with a machete, cornering two people in the back of the Zaxby's next door. According to the affidavit, one of the two was pointing a gun at the suspect.

The affidavit said at that point, Garrett spotted the deputies and turned his attention to them, approaching them in the parking lot and allowing the two in the Zaxby's to escape.

According to the affidavit, deputies formed a line and commanded Garrett to drop the weapons, but he did not. They said they sprayed Garrett twice with chemical agent, but he continued to back around the parking lot while saying, "this is the end," "shoot me," and "there's nothing to talk about."

The affidavit said deputies established a perimeter and got civilians out of the way while continuing to speak with Garrett.

According to the affidavit, a McDonald's employee told investigators before they arrived, Garrett had shot through the glass there and assaulted an employee, punching him several times.

The affidavit said deputies used Bola Wrap three times but Garrett did not stop. They said he then pulled a knife in addition to the machete, and deputies tased Garrett at that time. According to the affidavit, Garrett pulled one of the electrodes out and swung his machete around, and deputies tased him a second time before they were able to take him into custody with the help of Memphis Police.

During a search of the area, the affidavit said deputies found a shell casing, machete case, and backpack with three bottles of pills belonging to Garrett.
