Shelby County Sheriff's Office identifies man found dead in back of car

No foul play is suspected in the death of 75-year-old Ernest Lee Coleman.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — UPDATE JULY 1, 9PM FROM THE SHELBY COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:

"On June 30 at approximately 10 am, Ernest Lee Coleman, 75, was found inside an unoccupied Sheriff’s Office vehicle near the Hospitality Hub on Washington Ave. Memphis Fire Dept. paramedics pronounced him deceased, & the medical examiner was notified and accepted jurisdiction.

SCSO detectives, through videotape examination and interviews over the past 24+ hours, have determined that Mr. Coleman apparently entered one of the unoccupied Juvenile Court pool vehicles that was parked on Washington Avenue through a rear door.

A deputy later found the victim, who reportedly frequented the area, in the back seat of the patrol car. Following determination that the victim was not in the custody of law enforcement, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will stay in charge of the investigation.

Although the medical examiner will make the final determination of the cause of death following an autopsy, no foul play is suspected. Positive identification of Mr. Coleman was made by the medical examiner. This investigation is ongoing."
