Chemical explosion and fire in Memphis injures four workers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One worker has been hospitalized after a warehouse fire Tuesday afternoon in Memphis.

The Memphis Fire Department said it responded about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday to an explosion and fire at the PMC Biogenix warehouse in the 1200 block of Pope Street. About 250 personnel with 74 pieces of equipment responded to fight the flames.

It took firefighters until about 5:30 p.m. to get the fire under control.

Firefighters said one worker was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has since been downgraded to stable. Three workers were also treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said there is no environmental damage that requires evacuation.

Fire crews remained on the scene until about noon Wednesday as the investigation into the fire continued. The total cost of damage has not yet been determined. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
