SCSO Check Sex Offenders To Keep Children Safe
As Halloween creeps closer, Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies have begun their annual sex offender compliance checks.

Deputies started checking on more than a hundred registered sex offenders on Sunday, and they will continue their checks until Halloween on Tuesday.

“People don’t feel safe going from door to door these days with how crazy the world is,” said Shelby County resident Wayne Smith.

Smith, a father of five, prefers trunk or treating events, but is grateful deputies are ensuring sex offenders are following the law before many kids go door to door for candy.

I don’t feel like anyone wants to think that a sexual predator is anywhere near around their children at any point in time but especially at a time like this where you have so many kids out at one time,” said Smith.

“It’s critically important. Our children are a precious portion of our community,” said Shelby County Sheriff Lt. Anthony Buckner.

Lt. Buckner said they make sure offenders are living where they say they are.

“The first thing will look for is Halloween decorations that’s kind of a clue for us. Once we make contact with the offender we’ll enter the home looking for any kind of costumes,” said Buckner.

According to Buckner, no violations were reported Sunday.

While law enforcement does their part, parents can also plan safe trick or treating routes by checking the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry online. Enter your zip code and you get an instant list of registered sex offenders and addresses.

Deputies will be on patrol on Halloween to ensure kids are using sidewalks and ensure a safe atmosphere.

SCSO offers these additional safety tips for safe trick or treating:
– Travel in groups
– Make sure masks fit correctly so you can see
– Use reflective tape on costumes and bags
– Inspect candy before eating
