TBI investigates deadly officer-involved shooting in Frayser

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has clarified the identity of the person shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Frayser late Thursday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – The TBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Frasyer late Thursday night.

The shootinghappened around 11:40 p.m. when officers were responding to a prowler call inthe 3600 block of Hallbrook. Investigators say while reposonding to the prowlercall, officers saw a loud disturbance between three people. They say 51-year-oldAntonio Smith was armed and failed to comply with officers’ demands. They saythe situation escalated, and two officers fired shots, killing Smith.

No officers wereinjured.

MPD has a massivepresence surrounding the area on Hallbrook St. near Corning is blocked offwhile TBI agents investigate. 

“Theofficer-involved shootings is always a very volatile potentially volatilescene, but we have tried to make sure we contain the scene and maintain thescene for the TBI,” said MPD Director Mike Rallings.

This shootinghappened about two miles from the deadly shooting of Brandon Webber back in thesummer by U-S Marshalls. That shooting led to riots in Frayser. 

This is an ongoing TBIinvestigation.  

(TBI NEWS RELEASE) – At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI Agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting in Memphis that occurred late Thursday night.

Preliminary information indicates the incident happened at approximately 11:43 p.m. in the 3600 block of Hallbrook Street in the Frayser community of Memphis.  Officers with the Memphis Police Department were responding to an unrelated call when they observed a loud disturbance between three individuals.  As officers approached, one of the individuals, who was armed, for reasons still under investigation, failed to comply with officers’ demands.  The situation escalated, resulting in two officers firing shots, striking the man and fatally wounding him.  The deceased individual has been identified as Antonio Smith (DOB: 12/17/68) of Memphis.  No officers were injured during the incident.

TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation.  Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for her review and consideration.

The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective agency.
