Opinion | My saddest day was one year ago today | Richard Ransom

ABC24 Anchor Richard Ransom shares his thoughts on last year's Capitol riot in Thursday's Ransom Note.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Thursday's Ransom Note, my saddest day.

Without question, my saddest day to be an American was one year ago today.

Watching my fellow Americans attack their own Capitol building based on a web of lies about a stolen election that really wasn't stolen, and in fact, was actually the most secure in U.S. history.

Yet, thanks to leaders and media organizations who place power over principle, who ignore or minimize scenes like of Americans attacking police officers, the big lie lives on.

We should remain hopeful. While the wheels of justice to investigate what really happened are turning much too slowly for my liking, at least they're turning. But, time is running out.

This is an election year, including for state and local offices. We should realize now, more than ever, that what has kept our democracy going has depended not so much on how the winner responds to winning, but how the loser responds to losing.
