Charles L. Ewing, Sr., began Ewing Moving Service, Inc. in 1980 with a pickup truck, two movers and faith. For 13 years Mr. Ewing managed his company while holding down a full-time job as a manager in the printing department of Memphis’ daily newspaper, The Commercial Appeal. By 1993 business was doing so well that Ewing was able to leave The Commercial Appeal to focus solely on the operations of Ewing Moving Service. Since then, the company has grown into one of the Mid-South’s largest minority-owned moving and storage facilities. Its operations are headquartered in Memphis, TN in a 120,000 square foot facility with a satellite office and an additional 7,000 square feet in Nashville, TN.

A trailblazer in the industry, Mr. Ewing’s acquisition of his Nashville, TN, facility was received with much fanfare. Ewing Moving Service, Inc. became the first black owned company to receive a Payment-In-Lieu-of-Taxes (PILOT) from the Industrial Development Board.

His hard work and ingenuity has been recognized with several awards, which include being inducted in the Society of Entrepreneurs, receiving the Tennessee Minority Supplier Development Councils Impact Awards Minority Supplier of the Year award. He has also been recognized by the Memphis Business Journal for his outstanding business, personal and community accomplishments as one of their “Top 40 Under Forty.”

he was instrumental in bringing Memphis its first professional athletic team, The Memphis Grizzlies. As a minority owner, he and several other local business owners pooled their resources together and persuaded the City of Memphis and Shelby County governments that a NBA team would be good for The Bluff City. The group’s success resulted in the relocation of the Grizzlies from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Memphis. Ewing not only helped orchestrate the move, but he and his company physically executed it. This move was not only a historic event for Memphis, but for Mr. Ewing himself. It was the company’s first international move!

Mr. Ewing is a proud graduate of the historic Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, TN and holds an Associates Degree in Business Accounting from Shelby State Community College.
