ARLINGTON, TN (abc24.com) - Parents at Barret’s Chapel Elementary School in Arlington believe it’s the best kept secret in Shelby County. Part of the schools’ mission statement is to “ensure a strong educational foundation that empowers students to be life-long learners.”

One thing educators will tell you: if you make learning fun, you make it easy. It’s something teachers at Barret’s Chapel Elementary know first hand.

Teacher Kim Clemens said, “Because we’re up and doing hands on activities, they’re more willing to learn and we’re not just sitting at a desk reading a book.”

In Ms. Clemens’ 5th grade science class students were creating their own roller coasters, but as you can imagine there was a lesson behind it.

“It’s about potential and kinetic energy and we’re showing how potential is at the top and then kinetic is whenever you’re in the middle going down," explained student Connor Price.

If that sounds impressive, it should. Students and teachers there are top notch. Barret’s has been rated as a level 5 school by the State of Tennessee, meaning the school is one of the highest academic performing schools in the state.

Students are also motivated to perform community service through the school's student council.

Student Amelia Simpson said, “We go around and do activities and have fun, fundraisers and when we do special things we get cool things like the class that got the most money got to silly string our librarian.”

Not only is Barret’s a training ground for students, but future educators as well. The school has a partnership with the University of Memphis to train student teachers.

They start striving for excellence pretty young at Barret's; students in grades K through 5 are driven to be their best.

“Our teachers work incredibly hard to teach our children, our students work hard and our parents work with us on all levels," stated Principal Barbara Hodge.

Barret’s Chapel prides itself on a being a fine arts school. Each student there is involved in music, art or drama.

Even athletic activities have an academic twist. Everyone there says it's a special place.

Teacher Tim Jones affirmed, "It’s just a close knit community and a close knit school."

From science, to math, sports, and everything in between, they’ve got it all. Take it from 3rd grader Gabby Dickerson. "My favorite thing about Barret’s Chapel School is that they’re nice and they provide a nice education and I think lots of kids would like to come here."

Gabby is right - Barret’s Chapel Elementary is without a doubt a cool school.
