OLIVE BRANCH, MS (abc24.com) - At Lewisburg Primary School in Olive Branch, Mississippi the mission is clearly defined: to help students grow academically, as well as socially.

A major part of that involves their work with special needs students. For hearing impaired students, that includes an educational interpreter assigned to every class.

Administrators say it’s important that the communication skills of these youngsters are developed at an early age.

"It’s language development," explained educational interpreter Laura Hoyer, "the very first thing that they start learning, that language, sign language is just another way to increase that communication."

Kim Rowe knows the importance of that all too well. Her son is a hearing impaired first grader at the school. She says she’s truly thankful for the support her son has gotten there. In fact, she’s the person who nominated Lewisburg Primary to be an ABC 24 Cool School.

"Every time you come in the school you can just tell that the teachers and staff here love the children. They go above and beyond, the teachers do so much extra," she said.

The staff at the K - 2ND grade school also knows the importance of building character. The integrity program has been developed to highlight the need to not only be a good student, but a good person. Banners throughout the school are there as a reminder.

"Every child in this school knows the definition of integrity, which is to always choose what is good and true and right," said school counselor Penny Martin.

Principal Jeannie Treadway added, "They choose their path, and as long as we keep those high expectations for them, children rise to those."

The message has gotten through. Students like 2nd grader Dana Darling certainly appreciate their classmates, "I probably think the most coolest thing about school is all my friends."

As for the teachers, Dana says they’re pretty cool as well, "They really help me out a lot; they’re really like my friends too."

From their work with special needs students to the focus on character building, it’s pretty easy to see why Lewisburg Primary is a cool school.
