It’s back and better than ever--join WEVL FM 89.9 friends and listeners on the grounds of the National Ornamental Metal Museum for the 24th annual Blues on the Bluff concert on Saturday, July 21.

Relax on the bluff of the Mississippi River while you enjoy the talents of Lightnin’ Malcolm with Marquell Kimbrough, Elmo & The Shades, and Jimbo Mathus & The Tri-State Coalition.

Lightnin’ Malcolm will get the party started with his brand of Hill Country blues fused with modern elements of funk, reggae, soul, and rock. He’ll showcase songs from his latest release Renegade—a guitar and drums duo recording, played live and raw in true North Mississippi Hill Country tradition. Marquell Kimbrough, grandson of blues legend Junior Kimbrough, will join Malcolm on drums.

Elmo & The Shades will be shaking things up with some of the best blues, R&B, soul and funk favorites of the last 40 years. Elmo’s renowned band mates include musicians who have played on Stax, Hi and Sun recordings and have performed in bands with Al Green, James Brown, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and many more.

Finally, Jimbo Mathus & The Tri-State Coalition are making a pit-stop in Memphis just for WEVL on their tour to feed “catfish music to the masses.” Jimbo, a native Mississippian and prolific songwriter, is also known for being the ringleader of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Along with his band The Tri-State Coalition, he’s a guaranteed powerhouse of blues, soul and rock-n-roll.

Central BBQ will keep the party going strong by serving up fresh pork shoulder sandwiches, smoked turkey legs, barbecued portabello mushroom sandwiches and more. Central BBQ is generously donating all food sales profits to WEVL. Guests will be able to keep cool and refreshed with WEVL’s assortment of favorite alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages—all proceeds of which also benefit the station.

The ultimate end to the evening will be WEVL’s Silent Auction, including art, bicycles, musical performances, and merchandise and gift certificates from Memphis restaurants, shops, venues, and more. Guests will also have an opportunity to purchase the 2012 Blues on the Bluff® poster and other WEVL merchandise.

There is certainly no better way to enjoy a balmy Memphis evening than by sitting under giant shady oaks with a BBQ sandwich in hand, the sounds of blues guitar filling the air and the best view of the Mighty Mississippi in the entire Mid South.

Guests may bring chairs and picnic blankets, but are asked to leave ice chests and pets at home. The gate opens at 6:00 p.m., show time is 6:30, and party doesn’t end until 11:00. The $20 admission price ($10 for kids 11 and under) entitles guests to free guarded parking and benefits WEVL FM 89.9. Discounted advance tickets can be purchased online at www.wevl.org/bob.
