For its 14th consecutive year, Agape Child & Family Services will host its HeartLight Celebration, a memorable night featuring Dr. Maya Angelou, one of the most influential women of our time. Dr. Angelou is a poet, filmmaker, author and civil rights activist and she will be in Memphis on Saturday August 25 to help Agape raise awareness and engage the Memphis community on behalf of children and families in need. This event will be at the Cannon Center for Performing Arts and begin at 7:30 p.m.
Kirk Whalum, native Memphian and Grammy Award-winning music icon, will emcee HeartLight 2012. A private dinner will be held earlier in the evening for sponsors and their guests and will feature Gayle S. Rose as the keynote speaker. Ms. Rose is a local philanthropist, dynamic entrepreneur and founder/CEO of EVS Corporation.
Agape Child & Family Services has been serving Memphis since 1970. For more than 42 years, the agency has focused on providing healthy homes for children and families who are homeless, in foster care and living in our community with fewer opportunities. By connecting children to loving, permanent families through Adoption Services, serving homeless women through the Families in Transition (FIT) initiative and establishing transformative relationships in fragile communities through Powerlines Community Network (PCN), Agape can serve people in Memphis in a variety of meaningful ways.
“I am excited that Dr. Angelou cares about our local community and is traveling to share in this benefit with Agape,” said David Jordan, Agape’s Executive Director. “We thrive on being selfless, an attribute that Dr. Angelou has shown throughout the years by sharing her rich history and profound knowledge of our culture with the world. It is with great honor to have her in Memphis, where philanthropic efforts as well as sharing love and compassion for others will help our community and our generation.”
HeartLight 2012 will recognize individuals and families that have been served by Agape. The agency will also recognize client achievements and celebrate exceptional contributions and services that Agape and their partners have provided. In addition, Agape will honor Dr. Angelou for a lifetime of community education, awareness and public service.
Presented by IMC Companies, and with generous support from Engineered Medical Systems, this historic event is one that will leave a lasting and positive effect on attendees and our community.
