Known as America’s Night Out, “National Night Out” began in 1983, and is held on the first Tuesday in August. This year’s National Night Out will be Tuesday, August 7, 2012. Local communities in Memphis are expected to team up with the Memphis Police Department and will work together on this day. We will participate along with the rest of the nation in the annual “National Night Out” event.

The goal of “NNO” is for all Memphis residents to get together in their neighborhoods and communicate with each other to form strong community bonds. The activities help to build safer neighborhoods where everyone looks out for one another and take a stand against crimes and decrease criminal behavior. NNO is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Many communities will have block parties that have been registered with the Memphis Police Department. During the block parties, cookouts, parades and other NNO activities, participants will “turn on their porch lights and stand together in turning off the lights on crime”. Also throughout this event, members from the Memphis Police Department’s Command Staff and area Memphis Police Officers will visit these community block parties to join in the celebration of this National Event.

Last year in 2011, National Night Out involved more than 120 neighborhoods/ organizations in this city. There were over 37 million people in 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide registered for National Night Out. National Night Out is expected to be the largest ever this year.

If you are interested in participating in taking a stand against crimes in your area, sign up for National Night Out. Contact your local precinct Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for more information. The deadline for all registration forms to be turned in is JULY 27, 2011.
