MATA Celebrates 20th Anniversary of the Main Street Trolley

Memphis Area Transit Authority will celebrate the trolley’s 20th Anniversary by offering all passengers a reduced fare of only 20¢, Wednesday – Friday, April 24-26, 2013.

Memphis, TN -  (April 19, 2013) Memphis Area Transit Authority will celebrate the trolley’s 20th Anniversary by offering all passengers a reduced fare of only 20¢,  Wednesday – Friday, April 24-26, 2013.   Passengers may ride on Main Street, Madison Avenue and the Riverfront loop and experience the nostalgia of the trolley.  Hop on board one of MATA’s vintage rail trolleys to museums, galleries, shopping, sidewalk cafes, or restaurants with fine or casual dining and enjoy downtown.  

Join the celebration on Thursday, April 25, free cake will be served at MATA’s North End Terminal,

444 North Main Street, and Friday, April 26on the plaza at Central Station, 545 South Main.  Trolley employees will help cut the cake beginning at 12 noon on both days.

No coupons or passes are needed, simply board any trolley on Madison, Main Street or the Riverfront during April 24-26, and ride for only 20¢.   Seniors 65 years of age and older and persons with disabilities with a valid MATA ID card may ride for 10¢.

Trolleys run about every 10 minutes, and serve 34 stations along the line.  The stations and trolleys are accessible for persons with disabilities.

Trolleys made their inaugural run in April 1993 with six trolleys operating on Main Street.  The Riverfront line was added in 1997, and in March 2004, the Madison line was introduced.  Today, MATA operates 16 trolleys on seven miles of track.  During 2012, the trolleys carried 1,491,841 passengers.

In 2012, the trolley line experienced the highest percentage increase in riders of all rail transportation operated by public transit systems in the United States.   The Main Street Trolley was recently named #6 in the list of top ten attractions in Memphis by the Memphis Business Journal.
