MEMPHIS, Tennessee, June 17, 2013 – It was announced today that sports broadcasters, Gil Tyree and Andy Burrell, will be joining WATN-TV (ABC) and WLMT-TV (CW) serving the Memphis, TN DMA 49, and WJKT-TV (FOX) serving the Jackson, TN DMA 176, and each station’s associated digital services.
Mr. Tyree brings nearly 30 years of sports broadcasting experience to the Memphis area, most recently serving as play-by-play announcer for Georgia High School Football and Basketball on Georgia Public Broadcasting and as sports anchor at WAGA in Atlanta. With career stops in Virginia, Alabama, Florida, and Arizona, Mr. Tyree has covered a wide range of local sports and cultivated key relationships in the national sports community. “In sports, it’s always fun to root for the underdog”, said Mr. Tyree. “And, I understand Memphians have a history of being considered the underdog and surprising the country by building a tradition of winning. Although, I have covered sports on a national level, my heart belongs to the local teams and athletes.”

Mr. Burrell brings the experience of being an athlete to his sports reporting and anchoring. He played football at Texas Christian University under Justin Fuente, now Memphis Tigers head football coach. Burrell began sports reporting in Dallas, at the local CBS affiliate. He spent time as a contributor to ESPN Radio and served as sports anchor/reporter at KATC in Lafayette, Louisiana where he hosted a local Friday Night High School Football show. Burrell also spent time working as an assistant to former NFL receiver, Michael Irvin. “I grew up dreaming of covering sports on television”, said Mr. Burrell. “And, I have ties to Memphis… my dad’s side of the family came from this area. So, reporting local sports in the Mid-South is a dream come true.”

Gil and Andy will join local favorite Marcus “Doc” Holliday as he continues to cover both sports and news for the local stations.

WATN/WLMT/WJKT News Director Lisa Lovell says she’s excited to have such high level of talent in a local sports team. “I think both Gil and Andy bring a broad wealth of sports knowledge to our viewers. And, are such pure sports fans they have a high level of excitement for all kinds of local sports stories”.
