LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP, abc24.com) - A longtime Little Rock legislator has fended off a challenge in the Democratic primary for a central Arkansas Senate seat.

Sen. Joyce Elliot defeated Rep. Fred Allen in the primary race for Senate District 31 on Tuesday.

Elliott has served in the Legislature since 2001. She resigned from her job directing a public-private consortium after questions were raised about whether she could legally hold that job and serve in the Legislature.

Allen, meanwhile, has served in the House since 2007.

The primary effectively decides the race because there isn't a Republican is running in the fall for the seat.
