NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - The Southern Poverty Law Center sent a letter to the Hardin County school system after a student said she was prohibited from publicly supporting gay rights in school.
The civil rights group said in a release that a student at Hardin County High School said that she was told by an assistant principal that she could not display slogans or symbols supportive of gay rights because those symbols advertise or promote sex.
The group also said the assistant principal terminated a student organized "Week of Pride" event to show support for gay rights and threatened students with suspension, class failure and disqualification from graduations.
SPLC said that unless the school takes action, it will file a lawsuit. The county superintendent did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
