JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A scientist at East Tennessee State University's College of Medicine has received a research grant to study new treatments for a disorder that causes premature aging in children.
Dr. Yue Zou has been awarded $100,000 over two years by the Progeria Research Foundation. Progeria is a genetic disorder and has no known treatment. Zou, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, has specialized in how the body repairs damaged DNA.
Progeria usually results in death during teen years.
Zou said his study could also help with research on DNA repair and cancer.
