NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A committee of Tennessee legislators is considering cutting in half the amount of scholarship money for some college students.
The cut being considered in the HOPE Scholarship program would reduce by 50 percent the funding for students who do not meet both the standardized testing and high school grade requirements.
The proposed cuts would most affect African-American students and those who attend Tennessee Board of Regents schools, according to The Tennessean.
The bipartisan Lottery Stabilization Task Force is scheduled to meet Tuesday to consider the option which would save an estimated $13 million to $17 million annually. More than 100,000 students receive HOPE Scholarships.
