ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Miss America contestants from Mississippi and New Hampshire have won the first night of preliminary competition as the pageant returned to Atlantic City after a six-year absence.

Samantha Russo, Miss New Hampshire, won a $2,000 scholarship in the talent competition Tuesday by singing "Don't Rain On My Parade" from the musical "Funny Girl."

Miss Mississippi, Chelsea Rick, won a $1,000 scholarship in the lifestyle and fitness competition, also known as the swimsuit competition.

Two more nights of preliminary competition will take place Wednesday and Thursday, followed by the traditional "show us your shoes" parade on the Boardwalk on Saturday, and the nationally televised finale Sunday night.

The pageant began in 1921 in Atlantic City, but has been held in Las Vegas the past six years.
