OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - A school bookkeeper who also volunteered as treasurer for the parent-teacher organization at Magnolia Park Elementary has pleaded guilty to embezzlement.
The Mississippi Press reports the theft involved $14,000 in PTO money.
Prosecutors say since Holly Harrison Fitts had no criminal record before her February arrest, the 28-year-old was accepted into the pretrial diversion program.
Court records show Fitts was ordered to pay a $250 fine and restitution.
Prosecutors say if Fitts completes the program, the felony charge could be removed from her record.
Ocean Springs police arrested Fitts in February, just two days after she was dismissed from her job at the school.
Police say Fitts had taken the money over a six-month period, which began in August 2010. They recovered some of the money at her home.
