JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting the second West Nile virus death for 2013, as well as five new human cases.
Health officials say in a news release that the death occurred in Forrest County and was a previously reported case. The new human cases were reported in Adams, Forrest, Lamar, Pike and Rankin counties, bringing the state total for 2013 to 35 human cases, including two deaths.
So far this year, cases have been reported in Adams, Bolivar, Forrest (4), Hinds (10), Jones (2), Lamar (4), Leflore (2), Lincoln, Lowndes, Madison (2), Marion, Pike, Rankin (4) and Wayne counties. The MSDH only reports laboratory-confirmed cases to the public.
In 2012, Mississippi had 247 WNV cases and five deaths.
