WEST PLAINS, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who died while training for a triathlon has been laid to rest in Howell County.

KKDY-FM reports more than 450 people attended Friday's funeral for Sgt. David Finley at the West Plains Civic Center.

The 43-year-old patrol veteran drowned June 22 at a lake in Wedington, Ark., while swimming with other athletes training for a triathlon in Fayetteville, Ark. That event was later canceled.

Colleagues praised Finley at Friday's service for his accomplishments, bravery and love of his family, his community and for the Highway Patrol.

Finley served as a police officer in the city of Republic before joining the patrol in 1995. He was assigned to Troop G in south-central Missouri.
