MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Albuquerque Isotopes edged the Memphis Redbirds by a 3-2 score on Saturday night in front of 9,858 fans at AutoZone Park. Memphis is now 3-12 against the Isotopes this year. It was the Redbirds’ second straight one-run loss to the Isotopes and league-leading 16th of the season

Outfielder Chad Huffman went 3-for-4 while catcher Rob Johnson hit a stand-up triple. Outfielder Tommy Pham added a pair of singles.

Carlos Martinez started slowly, allowing the first three Isotopes of the game to reach. Dee Gordon worked a leadoff, five-pitch walk and moved to third on an Elian Herrera base hit. Alex Castellanos followed by ripping an RBI liner up the middle. Chili Buss’ two-run double to left-center in the third pushed the Albuquerque lead to 3-0. Gordon and Herrera previously reached on a fielding error and hit by pitch.

Memphis recorded their first run in the next frame as Pham led off with a single. He moved to third on a two-base pickoff error and later scored as Chambers reached on an infield single. The Redbirds were able to cut the deficit within one run at 3-2 in seventh, as Greg Garcia and Pham opened with singles against reliever Sean White. Johnson then hit a deep sacrifice to right to score Pham.

The Redbirds’ tying run reached on a fielding error in the ninth, but was stranded as Kelvin De La Cruz converted his fourth save of the season.

Both starting pitchers earned decisions. Martinez (2-2) finished the evening with three runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings in the quality start. He walked three and struck out five. Albuquerque’s Matt Palmer (4-3) gave up one run on five hits in six innings.

In his first appearance since rejoining the Redbirds, Nick Greenwood tossed two shutout frames. Marc Rzepczynski ended with a perfect ninth.

Memphis will look to salvage a series split with Nick Additon (5-3, 4.29) on the mound at 1:35 pm CT.. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Jonathan Sanchez (0-0, 18.00).
