MEMPHIS, TN -- A future Memphis player made headlines Thursday along with the Tigers.

Briarcrest Christian School senior forward Austin Nichols was named the Gatorade Tennessee Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The two-time TSSAA Mr. Basketball award winner in Division II-AA averaged nearly 23 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists this past season. He led his team to a runner-up finish in back-to-back state tournaments. Nichols scored 42 points in his final game, and helped lead the Saints to a 27-7 record.

He scored 1,987 points and had 996 rebounds during his high school campaign.

The award from Gatorade is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community involvement.
