Southwind Defeats Dyer Co. For 3A Boys Title

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - A balanced scoring attack and a dominating defense powered Memphis Southwind to a 76-53 victory over Dyer County in the Class AAA boys Tennessee state tournament final at Middle Tennessee State University.

Tournament MVP Jajuan Johnson poured in 23 points on Saturday to lead Southwind (34-6) to the title in its first state tournament appearance. The Jaguars also got 17 points from Jonathan Williams while Payton Hulsey contributed 14 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds. Deckie Johnson added 12 points and 6 assists. All four players are seniors.

Southwind took control early, jumping out to an 11-2 lead just a little more than two minutes into the game and had a 46-30 lead at the half. Southwind shot 58.2 percent (32-55) from the field and won the rebounding battle 35-24.

Junior Malik Pugh led Dyer County (31-4) with 13 points.
