ABC 24 Cool School: Lausanne Collegiate School

Students at Lausanne Collegiate School not only come from all over Shelby County, but all over the world - 56 different countries, to be exact. Part of the school’s mission is to get kids ready for college and beyond.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - All you need is to just sit in one class at Lausanne Collegiate School and you know something here is very special.

"We have a whatever it takes attitude, whatever the problem is, whatever the obstacle is, whatever the situation is we’re going to figure out what it takes to solve it, to deal with it, to overcome it," said teacher Russ Williams.

The east Memphis school is not only a reflection of the local community, but the world. Students from 56 different countries are represented here.

"What it initially does is to give kids a global perspective," said Headmaster Stuart McCathie. "It looks at different view points, different people’s backgrounds."

Student Michal Cook added, "I think one of the most amazing things about Lausanne is the diversity that we have here in every sense of the word, whether it be race, religion, or just cultural background.”

Lausanne serves kids in Pre-K through 12th grade. Their International Baccalaureate Programme is touted as one of the best in the area.

The school also has a strong arts program, just a small part of how administrators hope to enrich the lives of students.

McCathie said, "Anything’s possible here. Anything for a student, for faculty members, as an institution. We’ll try anything. We’ll take anything on. And, we’re usually successful."

Lausanne also puts a special point of emphasis on technology, recognized literally around the globe for connecting students to technological resources. In fact, all middle and upper school students are allotted their own laptop or tablet device.

To say Lausanne students are successful may be a bit of an understatement. The last graduating class received nearly 300 college acceptance letters and more than $10 million in scholarships.

"I feel like by being here for so long I am the most well rounded person that I can possibly be," said Cook.

From the rich cultural diversity, to the passion for the arts and the next big technological advance, it’s clear to see Lausanne Collegiate School is pretty cool.
