Beale Street Club Owners Hope to Re-open Friday

Club 152, which was shut down last week by the District Attorney, expects to be back in business by this weekend, but it's up to a judge to decide.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Club 152, which was shut down last week by the District Attorney, expects to be back in business by this weekend.

With the Sunset Symphony and a Grizzlies playoff game this weekend, club owners have a sense of urgency to get Club 152 reopened as soon as possible. The club's lawyer spent all day in negotiations with prosecutors.

The nuisance order was set to be heard at 10:30 a.m.; lawyers for both sides were there on time but then met behind closed doors, leaving a near vacant courtroom waiting for hours.

Prosecutor Katie Ratton says, "I can't go into the details of the negotiations but I think we should have something tomorrow at the 10:30 docket."

Club 152 was shut down last week after prosecutors say they found drugs and illegal activity taking place in the popular Beale Street club. The club can re-open, under MPD's close watch, once its owners agree to the terms set by the State.

The lawyer for the club's owners says they don't agree with how the State brought the problems to their attention, by shutting down the club in broad daylight, but they are willing to fix the problems.

Defense attorney Ted Hamson says, "There's a common interest between the parties, the District Attorney's office has indicated they have an interest in preventing drug transactions and things like that on Beale, we have that same concern and interest."

As does concerned citizen Steve Pearson, who has seen several fights at the club and says it has no place on Beale Street. He waited in court all day to see the outcome of this hearing. "An establishment like that, it puts a bad taste on Memphis and Beale Street, that's world wide known, and that activity just cannot go on." Pearson says, "People will not want to come and spend tourist dollars with that activity."

If a deal is reached Friday and signed by the judge, Club 152 could be open as soon as that night.
