I do believe that what UnoHoo was getting at was that any dog CAN be dangerous, depending on how it is raised, socialized, & used. Pit bulls are only "bred" to be violent by the people who fight dog; originally used in pens in cities where livestock were kept. This may explain your confusion on their "purpose": (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_bull) My PB's are gentle as lambs.

UnoHoo has got it figured out. I once held a poisonous snake and it didn't even bite me, which is why I think it's a great idea to encourage and allow them to be around children as much as possible. Joking aside, I don't think pitbulls are evil at all and I think that 95% of the problems lie with the owners and not the dogs, but you have to face reality at some point. Different breeds of dogs were bred for specific purposes and it influences the way they act. Retrievers naturally like to fetch, labs like to swim, ratters like to catch vermin, greyhounds like to run, sheppards like to herd. Pitbulls were bred for a very specific purpose and that purpose was to attack and kill. They don't have to be that way and not every one is going to run around attacking and killing stuff, but it just comes more naturally to them than other breeds. If you want a dog that might kill someone, then I recommend you get a pitbull. If you're looking for a dog that will never attack and kill someone, then don't get a pitbull.

No, subgenius, "people" (& I use the term LOOSELY) who want them SOLELY for fighting, or guarding drugs, are the problem. These "people" not only have no business with 'pets', they should not be spawning more JUST liek themselves. I have been around a pit who just had pups; she had never seen me before, & just wagged her tail when I petted them!

Every day this happens. Pitbulls were bred to kill and no one knows what triggers the attack mode, but it doesn't matter because until pitbulls are removed, this will continue to happen. Pitbull advocates are doing everything to encourage more attacks like thus by claiming they are safe nanny dogs and that yorkies are more dangerous.....dangerous, careless lies with ignorance. There is no excuse for this child to be attacked...this is no surprise to those of us already educated by their gruesome attacks. We can hardly bear reading about these daily attacks in the country, but if it saves the next victim, we will continue to keep the statistics and warn the public.
