Commissioner Steve Mulroy Donates Kidney

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Shelby County commissioner is recovering after giving a complete stranger a second chance at life.

Commissioner Steve Mulroy held a news conference at Methodist University Hospital Thursday after he donated a kidney two days ago.

It was an altruistic donation, which means he has no idea who the recipient is. Mulroy says he was inspired to donate by an article he read in a newspaper about a priest, and a Simpsons episode.

Mulroy is already on the road to recovery, and says he'll be ready for Monday's commission meeting.

"I will say that come Monday I'll be there, I'll do my duty for the voters of Shelby County," he said. "Nowadays laparoscopic surgery so minimally invasive, it's easy in easy out, it's not a big deal."

More than 80,000 people in the U.S. are in need of a new kidney, but only 15,000 people receive one each year.
