Driver Charged in Midtown DUI Death

A drunk driver has been charged with the death of a man in a gruesome accident early Sunday morning.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A drunk driver has been charged with the death of a man in a gruesome accident early Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 30 on the southbound I-240 ramp near the Madison Avenue exit.

Police say 35-year-old Andrae Willis was driving in the wrong direction when he hit a 2008 Dodge Nitro. Both vehicles caught fire following the heavy impact; Willis was extracted from his vehicle, but the driver of the second vehicle could not be rescued due to intense flames.

Authorities have not released the identity of the driver killed in the accident.

Willis was transported to The MED in critical condition, where officers noted he smelled strongly of alcohol. He was charged with DUI, Failure to Drive on the Right Side of the Road, Reckless Driving, Vehicular Homicide: Intoxication and Vehicular Homicide: Reckless Driving.

Andrae Willis will be held at the Shelby County Jail on a $40,000 bond pending his release from The MED.
