Government Shutdown Affecting 100 At Memphis International Airport

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The shutdown could mean a longer wait for travelers at the airport and there are questions about safety too.

Some of the furloughed workers are responsible for inspecting planes and certifying pilots.

Those at Memphis International Airport and FedEx say everything is running normally.

However, 100 aviation safety inspectors are off the job here in Memphis.

That means there's a long list of things that are not being done.

According to the FAA, there is no training, no security inspections, no one checking on pilots or how airlines maintain planes.

And no background checks.

The FAA has a contingency plan.

We're told if the furloughs last longer than a few days, they will begin to call specific employees back to work to meet safety needs.
