MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Here in Memphis, many federal offices are closed. Including the office of Housing and Urban Development.

That is the agency that oversees everything from approving government backed home loans to issuing housing assistance vouchers for low income residents.

So what does that mean for Memphis?

The office officially closed Tuesday at 12:30 pm, but the doors were already locked by mid-morning.

Signs were posted on the door telling the public the office is not open for business.

So what does that mean for you?

For now, if your trying to buy a house with an FHA loan, it will take longer to get the paperwork processed.

If you get a housing or Section 8 voucher, for now you're ok. That is because October payments have been received.

But if the shut down lasts a long time there could be a problem. That is because the city of Memphis gets a lot of federal money from HUD.

Everything from programs that help the homeless and AIDS patients to construction projects like the rebuilding that is occurring in old public housing complexes like the old Cleaborn Homes.

“As long as it is in the short term well be able to function it probably. Won’t interfere with cash flow. If its long term, we got a bunch off issues nationwide. Locally, it could affect those types of things,” Memphis Chief Administrative Officer George Little said.

Of the more than 8,700 hud employees nationwide, just about 350 are still on the job. It is unclear how many are left at the Memphis office.
