Hundreds of Memphians Dedicated Local Run to Boston

A weekly run turned into a dedication for the victims of the Boston marathon bombing.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A weekly run turned into a dedication for the victims of the Boston marathon bombing. Running specialty stores across the country, including Fleet Feet Sports of Memphis, coordinated Monday's event.

It was simple 5k run but with a big message from Memphis: love and support for the runners and the people of Boston. More than 300 runners showed up outside the running store Fleet Feet Sports in East Memphis to dedicate their run to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Before people started the run there was a moment of silence.

"We're going to have 26.2 seconds of silence to support those families affected,” said Fleet Feet Sports owner Eric Flanders.

It was followed by the national anthem. As Memphians reflect on what happened one week ago, “You stay strong, you keep running, you keep moving forward, and that's what we're doing,” said runner Susan Graham.

Bostonians are thankful for the support, like Juanita Luke. She moved to Memphis five years ago. She's also an avid runner.

"I love it! I love it! It's not just the people of Boston but the people in Memphis are very supportive and I’m happy that Fleet Feet decided to do something like this,” said Luke.

200 "Runners for Boston" t-shirts sold out within minutes and at $10 each, 100-percent of that money will go to the Boston "One Fund" to help the victims.

"Small donations will hopefully make a difference to help someone up in Boston,” said Graham.

Runners hope their solidarity will send a message to Boston that they're not alone.

"It's part of their lifestyle, it's in their veins so they're excited to support other runners,” said Flanders.

Fleet Feet Sports will order more t-shirts, which should be in the next few days. You can also stop by at the store to make a donation to the Boston "One Fund." Fleet Feet Sports is located at 4530 Poplar Avenue in the Laurelwood Shopping Center. You can also visit www.fleetfeetsports.com/locations/Memphis for more information.
