On March 23, 2013, Officer Brian Phillips filed an Identity Theft report alleging that unknown suspects opened five separate accounts using his identity. Phillips filled out, signed and swore to an affidavit of fraud at a credit union in Millington, Tennessee, advising that over $20,000 in debt incurred was fraudulent.

The investigation, handled by Memphis Police Economic Crimes investigators, revealed that these accounts were valid debts made by Phillips. By filing the Identity Theft report, Phillips knowingly filed a false police report to a law enforcement officer.

On April 9, 2013, investigators issued an arrest warrant for Phillips. He turned himself in to authorities the same day and is currently out of jail on a $5,000 bond.

Phillips has been employed with the Memphis Police Department since February 2007 and is currently assigned to Mount Moriah Station.

He is currently relieved of duty with pay.
