Maxine Smith Passes Away at 83

Dr. Maxine A. Smith, a prominent and lifelong advocate for education and civil rights in Memphis, has passed away at age 83.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Dr. Maxine A. Smith, a prominent and lifelong advocate for education and civil rights in Memphis, has passed away at age 83.

Ruby Wharton, wife or Mayor A C Wharton, made the announcement Friday morning at her midtown law office. Wharton said Smith had been ill for quite some time.

Dr. Smith was born in Memphis and attended Booker T. Washington High School. As a leader in the civil rights movement, Smith helped to organize school desegregation and the 1968 sanitation workers strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Memphis.

In 1962, Smith became the executive secretary for the Memphis chapter of the NAACP, and remained actively involved with the organization until her passing. She also served as a board member for Memphis City Schools from 1971-1995.

Memorial services for Dr. Maxine A. Smith are still pending.
