MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Memphis Police Department has released the names of two officers who shot and killed a suspect that ran them over with his car while trying to flee.

Officers were called to the 1400-block of Jackson Ave around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, to check out a suspicious vehicle. Investigators said the driver suddenly accelerated as the officers were checking the car for suspicious activity.

Police opened fire, hitting the suspect. He was pronounced dead on the scene. One of the officers was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The other officer was also struck, but was treated on the scene. The suspect was later identified at 28-year-old Anjustine Hunter.

Officers searched Hunter's vehicle and found three grams of heroin.

Officers Steve McMillen, 28, and Joel Dunaway, 31, were routinely relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. McMillen has been with the MPD since October 2010; Dunaway has been the department since April 2010.
