MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) – A 13-year-old Memphis girl learned quite a lesson, “Don't steal from your family.” Her mom made sure plenty of people saw what she did. If you happened to drive by the intersection of Poplar and Highland on Sunday February 12, 2012 you did to.

One thing's for sure it’s a day and a lesson 13-year-old Natia Wade will never forget.

"My niece for the past couple of years, quite honestly has been kind of taking things. It hasn't been anything big, but it never really has to be,” her aunt Lauren Scales told abc24.com.

The last straw for her aunt and the youngster's mother was when the 13-year-old stole her mom's debt card to reactivate a cell phone that was cut off as a punishment.

“That's why she's out here, because she apparently has not learned her lesson,” said Scales.

The sign said it all, “I steal from my family." For her part, Natia told abc24.com she didn't realize what she did was such a big deal.

“I didn't think it made any sense, so I just wanted my phone back,” said Wade.

Now not only has she lost the phone, but she had to endure a bit of embarrassment. Her aunt told abc24.com she hopes the message gets through.

“She didn't want to, she really didn't want to and I really didn't want to. Don't get me wrong because you never want to put your child in this situation because they're fragile, but with all of the things that are going on with kids stealing things and all the crime being committed in Memphis, she will not be one of them,” Scales told abc24.com

Way to go to the Aunt and the mother coming together as "family" should to guide this young lady in the right direction. To many parents are to worried about what others think to actually discipline their children, to many parents want to be "friends" not parents. If more families did this we would not have so many juvenile offenders. Stealing is stealing be it family or stranger.

Quoted a bit out of context I'd say. That's the difference in having the government dole out punishment to a child opposed to parents actually being parents and punishing their kids personally. If this girl had stolen and was being tried as an adult to be sent to prison for several years, then my quoted sentiments would apply to this topic as well. Parents are responsible for their children's actions until they turn 18. This "aunt" understands that, and you are still a moron. It pains me to actually dignify your stupidity with a response, as your retort doesn't really make much sense either.

@ "Goldentaint".....Quote: "14 is VERY far from being an adult. If you want to punish someone, punish whatever adults were responsible for this child's actions at the time.".........Hypocrisy in action.....that's just how that boy, "Goldentaint" rolls......

As usual, Frayserrboi's comment makes absolutely no sense and he votes for his own comment. . . I don't think standing on the sidewalk is nearly as dangerous as you think it is.

Frasyerboi, I'm the "Aunt", so thank you for miss quote. But when your house gets broken into by a teen or your property has been violated by a teen, you will wish their parents did exactly what I did. We love her and want the best for her. I am a third generation business owner and I want her to be the fourth. After Sunday, she just might be.

This "Mom" needs to have her head examined by a competant Pyschiatrist...it's a good thing the child wasn't assaulted as a result of her actions!
