MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Mid-South teen is getting national recognition for giving the gift of life. Lexie Davis was only 17-years-old when she died, and her family donated her organs. Now her likeness will be featured on a float in the Rose Parade.

"I decided that she had life in her and I wanted someone else to go and live. So I made that choice to help her go on and be an organ donor," said Yolanda Walton, Lexie's mother.

That choice was recognized by the Mid-South Transplant Foundation, who hosted an event in honor of the former East High School student.

"She was a young girl who unfortunately died due to epilepsy seizure but in her death her family chose donation and Lexie saved 7 people with solid organs and countless more with tissue donation," said Randa Lipman with the Mid-South Transplant Foundation.

The program featured dancers, a motivational speech from Lexie's mom and nurse, along with family and friends getting a chance to decorate a floragraph of Lexie.

Lexie's floragraph will travel to Pasadena California and appear on the 'Donate Life' Rose Parade float on January 1, 2013.

Students also received information on how they too can make a difference and give the gift of life.

"The greatest joy came to me when I met her heart recipient this past summer and um, just meeting her took my breath away. I knew I made the right decision," Walton said.

Those in attendance showed their love by wearing Lexie's favorite color, green.

"I see that the school really loved her and they came out and wore their green. They supported us and before she passed they still supported us throughout the time and it's like they're still gonna be here," said Lexie's sister Krista.

You can catch the Rose Parade right here on ABC 24 on New Year's Day.
