Neighbors Defend Former MPD Officer Indicted for Forcing Felons to Perform Sex Acts

Investigators say he forced criminals to trade sex for freedom. His neighbors don't believe it, saying he's a good cop.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - He's the former Memphis police officer accused of forcing felons to do terrible things. Brandon Berry was just indicted for official misconduct.

Investigators say he forced criminals to trade sex for freedom. His neighbors don't believe it. They say he's a good cop.

Berry grew up in south Memphis. Neighbors tell us he's innocent until proven guilty.

"I've heard about it," says Kevin Wilson. "But I don't believe it. I don't believe it."

Wilson says he's known Berry his whole life. "He grew up right here on this street."

Berry is in big trouble. A grand jury indicted him for forcing men with outstanding warrants to perform oral sex on him instead of being arrested. Investigators say he often held the men at gunpoint.

"We see him with females. It's hard to believe," Wilson says. "But you know how it is. One person says it, everybody else jumps on the bandwagon."

Berry resigned from MPD last month. Wilson says neighbors didn't know about that.

"He hadn't said nothing about it to us around in the neighborhood. We don't bring it up around here. He used to stop by here and blow at us and waive. We knew he was a cool police officer."

Wilson says Berry also used to speak at Oak Grove Baptist Church.

The church's pastor didn't want to talk on camera, but says Berry grew up coming there and he'll be considered innocent until proven guilty.

"He did good work in the neighborhood," says Wilson.

No court date has been set for Berry. He was released from jail Thursday on a $5,000 bond.
