Police Looking for Driver Who Hit Woman in Wheelchair

Confined to a wheelchair and left for dead in a hit and run, 58-year-old Deborah Stone is home from the hospital after she was injured Wednesday by a driver now wanted by Memphis Police.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Confined to a wheelchair and left for dead in a hit and run, 58-year-old Deborah Stone is home from the hospital after she was injured Wednesday by a driver now wanted by Memphis Police.

Witnesses say the driver ran a stop sign. The impact knocked Stone out of her wheelchair. She's okay, but now she needs a new wheelchair and police need help catching the careless driver who plowed into her.

"I heard the motor get louder and louder and louder,” said Deborah Stone as she relives that horrifying day. “I didn't get a chance to scream or anything. I just saw the lights coming. The car hit me purposely because I was almost to the curb and he hit me."

Stone was on her way to the corner store from her apartment complex near North Lauderdale and Exchange Wednesday night. Like many in her complex, she uses a wheelchair to get around.

"It knocked me out of it, I was laying down on the pavement,” she said. “The driver never stopped, never looked back."

Her wheelchair is broken. Miraculously, Stone came out without a scratch.

"I'm not bruised. Thank you Lord but you would think being knocked out of the chair I would but the only thing I can think of God's angels were posted all around me."

Residents say this corner has become dangerous to cross for all pedestrians.

"That's the second person that I know here that got hit and got knocked out of the wheelchair. It’s scary,” said a resident at Stone’s apartment complex, Megan Glover.

ABC 24 News even witnessed cars speeding down the street and ignoring the red flashing lights and stop signs. Stone hopes a surveillance camera will help catch the hit and run driver.

"I would tell them to turn themselves in,” Stone said. "My prayer is that they won't hurt anybody else."

Stone is not angry at the driver. She's just happy to be alive.

"God had his angels with me in their hearts so thank you Lord.”

Investigators are looking for a gray or silver Buick LaSabre with front end damage. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
