Possible Suspect Questioned in El Toro Loco Murder Investigation

Close friends of the family of a 19-year-old murdered outside an East Memphis restaurant say a suspect is being questioned by police.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Close friends of the family of a 19-year-old murdered outside an East Memphis restaurant say a suspect is being questioned by police.

Aaron Vasquez was murdered early Saturday morning as he took out the trash behind El Toro Loco on Kirby near the intersection of Quince.

"It has been really sad, and scary, and terrible for all of us," said Bereniz Gonzalez, who worked with Vasquez at El Toro Loco. "I worked with him the night it happened and I am just going to miss him a lot."

A security guard at the shopping center said she got a call from a manager at Kroger around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night. She tells abc24.com in an exclusive interview that she followed the man across the parking lot to a nearby Walgreen's. She says the man pretended to be renting a movie when she approached and asked him to approach her vehicle.

She said as he walked over she pulled up a picture of the suspect in Vasquez's murder and noticed the two looked familiar.

She said she asked the man if he was the suspect and he replied that he wasn't. She then flagged down police, who chased the man and arrested him.

Late Wednesday, Memphis police couldn't be reached to confirm the identity of the man detained, or if he was a suspect in Vasquez's death.

Earlier in the day, Vasquez's Toyota RAV4, stolen after his murder, suddenly re-appeared at the scene. Memphis Police towed away the vehicle to be processed for evidence.

The security guard says she hopes it turns out to be the man, saying workers in the shopping center have been on edge. Hours before Vasquez's murder, a worker at a nearby restaurant had his throat cut.

Friends agree, hoping an arrest provides some answers.
