MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - If there was a poster dog for animal abuse, Joey was it. He was abandoned and found starving to death in plain sight of a Tunica neighborhood.

When he was discovered last month Joey was so hungry he was eating rocks. Vets determined he hadn't eaten in months.

Joey was rescued by the volunteers of the Tunica Humane Society. Vets at Central Animal Hospital in Memphis performed surgery to remove the rocks from his stomach and patch up his other injuries.

According to Jennifer Karnes at Central Animal Hospital, his rehab is going great.

"He loves to go for romps in the field out back. He's learning how to chase. He's learning how to fetch a ball. He's eating beautifully. He's transitioning to a more normal dog food from the specialty dog food he's been on, and he has made a miraculous recovery," she told abc24.com.

Joey is doing so well, that he may go back to the Tunica Humane Society next week.

A lot of donations came in from around the country for Joey's care. As you can imagine, plenty of people want to adopt him.

The Tunica Humane Society will take a little time to assess his best match and ultimately send him to a good home.
