Shelby Co. Sheriff's Office Issues Dozens of Sex Offender Warrants

Do you know who your neighbors are? You just might be living next to a sex offender.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Do you know who your neighbors are? You could be living right next door to a sex offender.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office posted on their Facebook page Thursday that they've issued 35 warrants for violation of the Sex Offender Registry Act for offenders who are failing to report their address.

Memphians aren't too happy not knowing who they're living next to, particulary if it is a registered sex offender.

Memphis resident Gary Comella said, "You know, I would want to know that, and people with small children around, that sort of thing."

"Not good, but that's pretty much how I feel everyday in Memphis," said resident Stephanie Pincus.

"There's some in the neighborhood. I haven't checked recently, but in the past there are some here and we have a school within a mile up here which is a big concern," said David Smith.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is trying to reign in the number of sex offenders failing to report their home address.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office PIO, Chip Washington, said, "It does happen, and obviously when you have been convicted as a sex offender there are rules and regulations, and strict ones at that that you need to comply with and they all know what they are."

In Tennessee, violent sex offenders must report quarterly to law enforcement, and non-violent offenders must report annually. Failing to do so could result in a warrant, like those issued for the 35 people Shelby County Deputies are currently searching for.

If you know someone who is violating the Sex offender Registry Act, you can report it by calling the SCSO Fugitive Division at 901-222-5620, or you can always call CrimeStoppers with a tip at (901)528-CASH.
