Southaven Mayor Offers Partial Explanation of Paycheck Change

Call it Paycheck-Gate. New questions in Southaven over Mayor Greg Davis, his paycheck, and who knew what, and when, related to the Mayor's divorce.
SOUTHAVEN, MS (abc24.com) - Call it Paycheck-Gate. New questions in Southaven over Mayor Greg Davis, his paycheck, and who knew what, and when, related to the Mayor's divorce.

Already, two Southaven aldermen and the city's Police Chief have confirmed they overheard Mayor Davis say he had altered his paycheck during his divorce.

"While in executive session, under the auspices of discussing those matters not subject to public disclosure, Mayor Greg Davis stated to all those present that he recently had his City of Southaven payroll records altered that he had provided his wife, Suzann Davis, for consideration in his pending divorce," Police Chief Tom Long stated in an affidavit singed on November 8th.

Long said he heard the Mayor say that in September or October 2010.

Two days before Chief Long signed that affidavit, Wes Brown, the former Director of Human Resources, was transferred to the Parks Department. In a corresponding move, Former Deputy Parks Director Jarred Azzone was reassigned to HR by the Mayor.

The Board of Aldermen approved both moves.

"There were some personnel changes where someone was going to be terminated and I didn't feel like them losing their job, and the alderman took me swapping jobs so everyone would have a job through the holidays," Mayor Davis said Tuesday night.

Davis wouldn't comment on what, if anything, he told Brown to do regarding his paycheck, citing a gag order put in place by the judge overseeing his divorce.

"The only thing I have been able or allowed to say is if there is a fraudulent document, if you would like to provide me with a copy of it, I'd be happy to look at it to see if I can comment on it," he said.

"I say we have such versatile employees on the city's payroll," said Linda Temple, a longtime critic of Southaven politics. "It just astounds me that a parks guy can do HR work or an HR guy could maybe do parks work."

The City says both Benson and Azzone remained at their current salary.

"I can't put it any other way but just another screw up in the city of Southaven," Temple said.
