MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Members of the Unified School Board have shot down a proposal to delay the merger of Memphis and Shelby County schools.
Board member Tomeka Hart wanted the one-year delay because Republican lawmakers in Nashville are working to pass a new law that would allow any city in the state to set up its own school district.
If the legislation passes, the path for Shelby County municipalities to start their own school systems would be open.
The Board voted 11-6 against Hart's resolution, and declined to discuss the topic.
The school systems are scheduled to merge in August for the 2013-2014 school year.
