Local Cool School: East High Transportation STEM Academy

New school prepares students with science, technology and math focus

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Transportation businesses noticed there was a great need for workers, with certain skills, in their industry. Rather than go outside of Memphis to find those employees, Local 24 found out: Shelby County Schools and local companies are working together to supply that workforce.

"It's exciting to be able to start something new," said upcoming Freshman Azaria Boyd.

With weeks to go until the doors officially open to Shelby County School's newest academy dedicated to science, technology, engineering and math, crews are working up to the minute to get ready.

When the first freshmen class arrives, students like Boyd, who will walk the halls of East High Transportation-STEM,  will not only earn a diploma in four years, they will supply Memphis-based transportation businesses with a skilled workforce. Prepared: Day one.

"By the time the students reach college, it's really too late," explained Lischa Brooks, Executive Principal of the new school. "Businesses say we have a need for workers, we want workers coming out of college, two year institutions and we want workers coming out of high school ready to be employed."

Local 24 got a tour of the new school.

You won't find any desks. These classrooms are designed to meet the needs of 2017's students, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including the same tools used by FedEx to train their pilots.

It's hands-on learning, Brooks says at a high level.

"They are able to apply what they've learned," said Brooks.

The school will add one grade level each year.

If you are interested in attending the T-STEM academy, you can fill out an application in Room 106 at the Board of Education offices or call 901.416.5338
