3 Children Injured In Hit-And-Run At Hickory Ridge Middle School

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police are looking for the driver who hit three middle school students Monday morning and took off. It happened around 8:30 a.m. at Hickory Ridge Middle School in Hickory Hill.

None of the three students were seriously hurt, but one was rushed taken to the hospital as a precaution with a leg injury.

The incident left Hickory Ridge Middle parents upset, especially since public middle schools in Memphis are no longer patrolled by crossing guards.

MPD said a woman driving a light blue Nissan collided with the students and kept going. All three students were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

A few weeks ago, a MPD spokesperson said crossing guards haven’t been assigned to SCS middle schools for several years, but are assigned at elementary schools.

After Monday morning’s hit and run, Hickory Ridge Middle parents hope police and SCS leaders consider some added adult protection for children 11 to 14 crossing a total of five lanes on a busy stretch of Ridgeway.

“It’s just a shock I mean to see, they are just babies, and people don’t care, how they drive, they don’t know how to slow down,” parent Angela Cunningham said.

“Three children getting hit that should be a wake up for all parents, you know what I mean, because I’m just thankful it’s not my child, you know, my condolences go out to the children that was actually hit and their families but something need to be done about it,” parent Doc Holiday said.

MPD said 190 guards currently work at 220 of 238 identified elementary school posts. The remaining posts are covered by volunteers or uniform patrol officers.
