After Teen "Accidentally" Shot, Shocking Photos Show Friends With Guns
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) -- Guns. Bullets. Cash. All posted for the world to see.
Shocking photos show local teens with very real guns. The teens are friends with Cartrail Robertson, the 13-year-old who died early Wednesday morning after Memphis police say he and his 15-year-old friend were handling a gun.
"It breaks my heart," said DeAndre Brown. "It has become socially acceptable to allow our young people to play with guns."
Brown runs LifeLine For Success, a group that works with at-risk youth to help them avoid many of the pitfalls that lead to violence.
Brown knows from experience. He served prison time, and says he used to carry a gun for the sense of power it gave him.
"I automatically felt like I was invincible," he said.
The photos come to light the same day a Memphis woman captured this video.
Robertson says she was worried someone on the street would mistake the toy guns for the real deal.
"It's frustrating," Brown added. "It may be funny while you are riding down the street but when he is 17 and 18 and he know has a real gun, he may not make it home."
"You can't hit game over, you can't hit reset, you can't start over, you can't continue where you left off," Brown said. "If you make a bad decision with a gun now, you may not have a life."
On Wednesday, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton was in New Orleans, attending a conference with fellow mayors focused on decreasing youth violence.
A 15-year-old who was with Cartrail Robertson during the shooting is under arrest. He's charged with reckless homicide.
