Apartment Fire Critically Injures Man

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - An apartment fire left one man in extremely critical condition today.

Just after noon, Memphis Fire Department were called to an apartment fire at 1061 S. Orleans Street, between Edith Avenue and Jennette Place.

While the original fire was knocked down in just over 15 minutes, firefighters also saw heavy smoke in a neighboring apartment.

Paramedics were performing CPR on the 60-year-old victim as he was being taken to the hospital. The man suffered second and third degree burns to his body.

Memphis Police were called to the scene for crowd control.

Lt. Cooke with Memphis Fire Department says the cause of the fire was careless use of smoking materials.
