Arkansas Medical Marijuana Applications Total About 300 For Limited Number Of Licenses

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - The state of Arkansas is in the weeds after hundreds of people applied for a limited number of medical marijuana licenses.

Arkansas officials cut off applications Monday at 322

The Medical Marijuana Commission now begins to determine who will be the first to blaze a new frontier in the "Natural State."

Arkansas state officials received 322 applications from people looking to legally deal marijuana in Arkansas new weed business.

That's hundreds of applications at least 25 pages each for a limited number of licenses, 5 to cultivate marijuana and 32 for dispensaries.

There are just five marijuana board commissioners to weed through each applicant's business plans to scrutinize future funding and sources.

"Although the expectation, I think you'll have the commissioners really taking a pretty deep look into these things. I certainly think the additional information will be helpful," said Scott Hardin of the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.

Those who qualify for a license must also undergo a federal background check and meet a 60 percent state residency requirement.

The board expects to award licenses by the end of the year to serve the more than 1,000 patients who have already received a state issued marijuana cards.

Arkansas is now issuing $50 medical marijuana cards that are renewable each year.
